A Brief History of Ambient Music [Excerpts]

- Bryan Reesman

In Seconds, No. 38, 1996.

... Ambient Instinct has begun releasing an ongoing series of Ambient CDs. Their output has been varied, from the intriguing, exotic Ethnoambience of Adham Shaikh and Tetsu Inoue to the engaging "Anti-Ambience" of Terre Thaemlitz. Their output also includes works by artists such as Escape Tank and Facil who show that ther are many different interpretations of the term and genre.

... "I think contemporary Ambient is already so far removed from traditional Ambient, both sonically and conceptually, that the term 'Ambient' is basically a misnomner," asserts Terre Thaemlitz. "Many people, including myself, are either moving away from or attempting to complicate the term's usage, recalling its roots in Music Concrete and Socialist Constructivism. However, I do see Ambient's continual reappropriation and recontextualization as the social manifestation of its sonic function - to decentralize content."
