Terre Thaemlitz: Couture Cosmetique

- Laurence Roberts

In Queer Zine Explosion, No. 15, Spring 1998.

The liner notes are great, and serve to give the music a context much different from the usual vague feel-goodism of ambient music. The notes kick off with this quote from Dont Rhine of Ultra-red: "While the development of Queer-positive imagery and graphics exploded with AIDS activism in the 1980's, sonically we have little more than 'Hey-hey, ho-ho, Homophobia's got to go!'" But enough about the notes - what about the music? Voices and other sounds filter in and out at the limits of audibility. "Some het guy's probably thinkin' that he's checking out (inaudible) got six inches tucked between the crack of my ass (inaudible)." Mechanical sounds thwart your expectations of easy listening... after being lulled by drones you're jolted with auditory shocks, a sort of ambient aversion therapy.
