IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF TERRE THAEMLITZ, THIS COMPLETIST MP3 ARCHIVE OF AUDIO PROJECTS IS PROBABLY NOT A GOOD PLACE TO START.
When the set director for John Cusak's' film "High Fidelity" (US: 2000) needed to stock a record store magazine rack for a scene about elitist music nerds who think their knowledge of music nobody has ever heard of makes them better than others, it was not by chance that a copy of The Wire magazine featuring Terre on the cover was stocked front and center.
For over 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz has been producing digital audio in a variety of genres - from ambient to electroacoustic to direct digital synthesis to computer composed piano solos to the self-described "Fagjazz" deep house sound - with projects focusing on themes ranging from anti-Muzak campaigns to transgendered passport and border control issues.
In recent years, iTunes and other major online distributors had been making several of Terre's projects available for commercial download without any contracts, and without disclosing to whom they were paying sales royalties. Clearly, such distributors had no direct interest in Terre's audio projects, but simply wanted to increase the chances of making a sale from their ever-expanding commercial online archives. Now that the files have finally been taken offline, Terre presents this alternative offline archive containing everything from the best to the worst by this "musician's musician."
The "Dead Stock Archive" is intended as a treat for the completist fan, as well as a "fuck you" to the corporate audio thugs who are so successfully moving us toward paid subscription download culture by claiming a need to protect information from illegal sale, all the while themselves partaking in greed-based piracy. But no matter how wide a selection they offer, no archive shall ever be complete. It would be a mistake to allow the mass of noise available to prevent us from hearing the silence of that which is commercially absent.
Comatonse Recordings urges you to remain vigilant to the fact that every cultural representation of diversity, including online databases, is a farcical inversion of the exclusionary cultural mechanisms through which they are constructed. There is a dire need to think of information as other than a tradable commodity. The exchange of information is at the root of culture itself. Ethical piracy, sampling, file sharing - for the holding of one's own culture in the midst of unabated capitalism that drowns us in an ocean of information they say is illegal to drink - is our inherited burden. Conceiving of ways to make information available while minimizing our reliance upon the mechanisms of major industry is our problem to play with.

BIO: Terre Thaemlitz is an award winning multi-media producer, writer, public speaker, educator, audio remixer, DJ and owner of the Comatonse Recordings record label. Her work critically combines themes of identity politics - including gender, sexuality, class, linguistics, ethnicity and race - with an ongoing critique of the socio-economics of commercial media production. He has released over 15 solo albums, as well as numerous 12-inch singles and video works. Her writings on music and culture have been published internationally in a number of books, academic journals and magazines. As a speaker and educator on issues of non-essentialist Transgenderism and Queerness, Thaemlitz has participated in panel discussions throughout Europe and Japan. INSTALLING THE DEAD STOCK ARCHIVE IN ITUNES:
*TERRE'S TIP: Since this archive contains many files that may clutter the organization of your existing library, you may wish to create a new iTunes Library file specifically for this collection. (On a Macintosh, hold down the OPTION key when starting iTunes to get a pop-up window allowing you to create a new library or re-select your existing one.)
- Launch ITUNES.
- If adding the files to an existing iTunes Library, locate your ITUNES MUSIC folder (or wherever you normally keep your iTunes music); if creating a new library file, use the newly created ITUNES MUSIC folder.
- Copy the TERRE THAEMLITZ folder (in the DVD-R's AUDIO folder) into your ITUNES MUSIC folder. (Because this collection spans multiple DVD-R discs, copy items from all discs into one TERRE THAEMLITZ folder.)
