New solo presentation at the Bethnal Green project space uses music and film to explore the spaces between gender, sexuality and identity A new project by Terre Thaemlitz aka DJ Sprinkles has opened at Auto Italia's Bethnal Green art space in London. The electroacoustic, audiovisual installation Interstices combines film and music in order to explore the areas between gender, identity construction, intersexuality and more. The music featured in the project comes from the Thaemlitz album of the same name, released in 2000 on Mille Plateaux, and will be repurposed as a soundtrack incorporating white noise, country music, TV show samples and more. To run alongside the project, Thaemlitz will be taking up a two-day residency at Cafe Oto on 11-12 October. Other venues across Europe are also booked, including Corsica studios on 6 October, Unsound in Kraków (8), and Wire Club in Leeds (13). "It's such an urgent and relevant piece of work to be showing in London at a time when trans visibility is so important, specifically within dance music," says Will Rigby of the grassroots collective Auto-Italia. "Artists and DJ’s like Anohni, Laura Jane Grace and Juliana Huxtable are reshaping a usually cis, male dominated scene." Interstices recently appeared as part of the recent Documenta 14 programme in Athens. It will run at Auto Italia until 3 December. |
